- Born in 1971 in Geneva, Switzerland, Spanish and Swiss, Juan-Carlos Hernandez... blablabla.. easier to put what the journalist Luca Sabbatini wrote about me in "La Tribune de Genève", November 2007 "Aaaah, Juan-Carlos Hernandez ! Cleverly neglected beard, angelic smile, smooth talk… Those who are regulars at the Sud des Alpes know well his latin charming silhouette. Juan-Carlos has become the blue note’s « eye » by passion and the Geneva photographer has met and immortalised all the great-well not all of them, but the list is getting longer day by day-of contemporary jazz. Ornette Coleman opened his New-York appartment door for a portrait session which Juan-Carlos remembers with emotion. Sonny Rollins, Steve Coleman, Dave Douglas and many others live as well a second life thanks to the photographer’s lens. When Juan-Carlos perfectly masters the science of framing and light, he has a hell of a good ear nonetheless !"

Your shot shows the old man in the foreground, in the moment, in clear focus, perhaps reminiscing about his younger days. The background behind him takes up much more of the frame. The background is blurred and beautiful, perhaps like the man's memories. The past we leave behind us is always a lot larger than the moment we occupy right now.
That's a nice pairing of Neil Young's "Old Man" with your photo. They work well together.

What a beautiful combination of visual and audio! The photo is absolutely spectacular! I can think of many people in my past that I would have loved to have an unposed portrait of. You, Juan-Carlos would definitely be the one I would look for to do it.
